Case Study – AquiTron Water Monitoring System Installed at Gridserve, Braintree

THE FILLING STATION OF THE FUTURE
Britain’s first electric car forecourt in Braintree, Essex has some excellent green credentials including the use of the AquiTron Water Monitor system for major water leak detection included within the M&E design to help achieve credits for the BREEAM green buildings assessment scheme.

Aquilar were able to deliver a solution using the AquiTron AT-WM ‘Water Flow Monitor’ using a programmable controller together with WRAS approved water meters and water shut-off solenoid valve. This helps designers and building owners achieve credits to be fully BREEAM compliant for a WAT03 major leak detection system as well as providing peace of mind. The site is monitored for leaks or excessive water use. The addition of the solenoid valve ensures the water is shut-off until the alarm has been investigated.

WHAT IS BREEAM?
BREEAM is the world’s leading and most widely used environmental assessment method for assessing, rating and certifying buildings and recognises the value in higher performing assets across the built environment lifecycle. It is also known for its green building credentials addressing all aspects of environmental sustainability, covering 10 main categories including water.

BREEAM Water is included in new construction, BREEAM in Use along with Refurbishment and Fitout. It encourages sustainable water use in the operation of the building and site. Issues in this section focus on identifying means of reducing potable water consumption (internal and external) over the lifetime of the building and minimising losses through leaks.

WHAT IS A CREDIT AWARDED FOR?
A credit is awarded for a leak detection system which is capable of detecting a major water leak on the mains water supply within the building as well as between the building and the utilities water meter at the site’s boundary.
